EQUIPMENT

You don’t need much by way of equipment before you make this Best Southern Fried Chicken Batter recipe. All you’ll need are:

  • Bowls

(You’ll need a number of them.)

  • A whisk
  • A zip-lock bag
  • A skillet
  • Paper towels

And for the sake of being thorough, we’ll go right ahead and mention all those spoons, forks and long-handled prongs (for turning the Southern Chicken in the skillet) that are bound to find their way into the dishwasher after this cooking session.

DIRECTIONS:

There is one recommendation we like to give at the beginning of our instructions/ directions, which is: clear away any clutter in your cooking space. Cleaning up your cooking area and clearing away clutter is not just great for hygiene, but it also aids free range of movement while you’re getting your culinary genius on. Another thing it does – and this is our very favorite part – is that it frees up your cooking surfaces, like your counter top, so that you have enough space to lay out your ingredients in those small ceramic bowls beforehand, like they do on TV.

So, go right ahead and clear up that space if you have any clutter. Then, you can measure out your ingredients into those small bowls. Individually. Do NOT mix any of those ingredients together until the recipe tells you to, because there is ALWAYS a method.

Are you ready?

Take in a deep breath and let us begin!

STEP 1 Break the eggs (2 large eggs) into a bowl.

(The reason why you’re doing this in a different bowl, and not just skipping straight to STEP 2 is that it is safer to break the eggs separately first, usually one at a time, so as to prevent any incidents with bad eggs. It happens more often than you might think.)

STEP 2 Combine milk and eggs in a bowl. Whisk to blend well.

(Yes, the recipe is finally asking you to mix something together!)

STEP 3 In a zip-lock bag, mix flour, chili and garlic powder, paprika and 2 tablespoons salt, and pepper. Seal and shake to combine. (These are all our important flavoring agents, our seasonings so to speak.)

STEP 4 Put the chicken in the bag, shake again.

(This is the part where you let the chickens sit in the seasoning mixture so that it can soak in all those flavors. Sometimes, some people prepare everything in the zip-lock bag like this, along with the chicken, and then refrigerate it because they’re not planning on frying it immediately. This can be done overnight.)

STEP 5 Dip the chicken pieces in the milk soy sauce and egg mixture, then brown them in heated oil. (Browning is just a process of frying something- with or without added oil – until the color of the food item changes to brown. You’re going to need to be turning the chicken over so the other side can be browned too.)

STEP 6 Drain it on paper towels.

STEP 7 Serve with vegetable side dish.

STEP 8 Dig in and ENJOY !!

(Remember: Serves 4-6)

Note: You can find recipes for more than a few vegetable side dishes on this blog site, but if you can’t find them, leave a message for us in the comments section and we’ll be sure to get back to you. You can also feel free to drop in your special requests.
